(MENAFN- Arab Times) March 8th of each year marks International Women's Day (IWD) where organizations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women. Even though history is a witness of a long and hard struggle in making gains in women's equality by the adaptation of many international agreements on women's rights, gender equality and violence against women yet the world is still unequal
Therefore IWD is celebrated every year to steer world attention on areas of women's rights that require further focus. Joining a global celebration, Kuwait also commemorates this international occasion by identifying Kuwaiti women's achievements in the political, the social and the economic fronts. Professor at the College of Social Sciences at Kuwait University Dr Siham Al-Qabandi told KUNA, Friday, that IWD is an opportunity where women can jointly voice out their opinions, aspirations and desires to further their advancement in many walks of life
Al-Qabandi, a social activist, pointed out that Kuwaiti women have fought hard to gain their constitutional rights of equality; hence, they can be seen in many leading posts in governmental institutions. Kuwaiti women have also competed to seize the House Speaker post in the 2009 Parliament. Nonetheless, they still strive to gain more of their rights, she added. Another Professor at Kuwait University's Psychological College, Dr Amthal Al-Huwailah, told KUNA that this international celebration sheds focus on violence against women worldwide
Dr Al-Huwailah, who is also head of the family center for social and psychological counselling, said that women face domestic abuse that needs to be put an end to it. Women not only battle physical abuse inside their household by their male partners but also psychological one where they are being looked down on
Therefore, Dr Al-Huwailah stressed the importance of having active civic laws that ensure the full rights and protection of women against any discrimination. She pointed out that despite the fact that women are minutely scrutinized yet they strive to overcome numerous challenges by proving themselves equal to their fellow men
For that reason, His Highness the Amir's support for women in many public events is greatly appreciated. She noted that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah praises women's participation in the country's development and calls on giving them the respect they deserve. International Women's Day (IWD) has been marked by the United Nations since 1975. This year's theme is "Equality for women is progress for all.
