Du recently announced its new ‘WiFi UAE’ initiative, which provides access to WiFi in public areas for all UAE residents.

The initiative is guided by the UAE vision 2021 and the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for Dubai to become a Smart City. The project, which takes effect with immediate effect, will start its implementation in Abu Dhabi and Dubai then gradually across the rest of the UAE.

The initiative, which is planned to start immediately at more than 100 prominent locations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is envisaged to be rolled out to the rest of the UAE in its next phase. Completion of each phase will be announced separately.

WiFi UAE is designed to help UAE residents harness the power of communication to stay connected with their near and dear ones. In addition to this, UAE residents as well as visitors to the UAE will be able to receive information and guidance on popular tourist landmarks, directions, and other places of interest.

Ahmad bin Byat, chairman of du, said: “Today is a defining moment in the journey of the UAE’s Vision 2021 as we transform into a smart city. Time and again we have seen that progressive cities evolve – enabling their residents to use time more efficiently leading to better easier and happier lives. In today’s times, a key enabler in joining these pieces together is telecom technology.”
