“Long live the UAE for which we are ready to sacrifice our soul and the last drop of our blood.”

This is how the family of Emirati police officer First Lieutenant Tareq Al Shehi reacted to his death in a bomb blast at a village near Manama, Bahrain, while performing his national duty of maintaining order on Monday.

A pall of gloom descended on the people of Shaam, hometown of the 41-year-old martyr, and nearby towns and villages 35km to the north of of Ras Al Khaimah city.

Hundreds of Emiratis, residents, friends and relatives were very keen to attend and perform the funeral prayer for the deceased at the Ahmed bin Hanbal Mosque and accompany the coffin to his tomb at the Shaam graveyard on Tuesday.

The Emirati police officer was among three personnel of the Gulf Waves Force, under the joint GCC security cooperation agreement, killed in the blast. The radical Muqawama ‘Resistance’ Group in Bahrain claimed responsibility for the terrorist explosion.

The UAE Ministry of Interior offered deep condolences to his family and prayed to Allah to grant them patience and solace to bear his loss.

Hesa Abdullah Al Qadi, mother of the late officer, said she was agonised. “However, I am proud and happy he has become a martyr for the sake of his country.”

Tareq was very popular here and people loved him so much for his kind heart, social relationships, good conduct, commitment,
courage, and dedication to his work, she added.

“I am proud of him, and I am absolutely ready to sacrifice all my children for the sake of our dear country; long live the UAE!” said the 65-year-old mother, known as Umm Khalid.

Tareq’s sister, Mariam Al Shehi, said her mother kept repeating part of a song three hours after she was told about his death. “She kept chanting: ‘I am a soldier; how shameful to die in bed!”

Tareq’s father did the same
and sacrificed his soul for his nation while performing duty, his sister noted.

Struggling to suppress his grief, 12-year-old Mohammed Tariq Al Shehi, the late officer’s son, said, “We are all sad for losing our much-loved father, but we are still proud that he sacrificed his blood while serving his country which I love and do want to serve all my life.”

Mariam said the light of their family’s home is no more. “My lovable brother was the sustainer of the family after the death of our father over two years ago,” she said. “They were both buried on Tuesday.”

In tears, she said her late brother was keen to say goodbye to them all before travelling to Bahrain. “He used to say how much he wished to die as a martyr, but it is really agonising”.
