Oman Scout Group organises cyclingevent to encourage healthy lifestyle

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ist Oman Scout Group, part of British Scouting Overseas, organised a cycling event on Tuesday at Shatti al Qurm to encourage healthy lifestyle and spread awareness on reducing the use of motor vehicles.

''Sixty Cub Scouts in the age group of eight to ten years took part in the event to promote cycling, which is not only good for health, but prevents air pollution and also develops a sense of community. We wanted the public to see children having fun riding their bicycles,'' explained Joanna Vos, Cub Scouts leader.

Stressing on the importance of having dual-purpose sidewalks that will have cycling lanes, Joanna said, ''A large part of the year in Oman is very hot, but around five months are quite pleasant, which is the perfect time to get out and be active. It would be ideal if there are dual purpose sidewalks, which will have a segregated area for cycling. We urge the municipality to look into this matter.'' With 150 members under its fold, the 1st Oman Scout Group offers a variety of programmes for children.

''A lot of people are showing interest. Both Arabic and English speaking organisations offer the same badges. I encourage parents to send their children to scouting organisations as we do many positive things such as community work, sports, exercise, camping, learning to work as a team, about weather changes and literature,'' said Joann
