MRMWR plans to add more abattoirsto the existing 39 across Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (MRMWR), which currently operates 39 slaughterhouses, plans to add more in the coming years.

Eng Muad bin Salem al Hinai, director of veterinary control at MRMWR's Directorate General of Health Control and Sanitation, said that the aim of the ministry-run slaughterhouses is to provide meat that is disease-free

He added that the ministry has started refurbishing old municipal slaughterhouses and constructing new ones in various wilayats across the country.

Eng Hinai said that last year 178,046 animals were slaughtered in abattoirs affiliated to the ministry. ''At least 23,779kg of meat from 4,441 slaughtered animals with diseases was also disposed of as it was found unfit for human consumption.''

Eng Hinai said that these slaughterhouses provide meat that is free of diseases, here animals are slaughtered as prescribed by the Sharia, they protect the sultanate's animal resources by preventing epidemics and protect the environment and water resources from slaughter waste.

He asserted that the waste from the slaughter could be used for several purposes and that there is a need to prevent slaughtering in public areas. ''The private sector can play an important role in setting up slaughterhouses.''

Eng Hinai said that as part of its awareness campaigns, MRMWR is distributing leaflets and brochures on the importance of slaughtering animals only in slaughterhouses.

The ministry also creates awareness during Eid and other festivals regarding proper disposal of slaughter waste so as to avoid polluting the environment and water resources.
