(MENAFN - The Peninsula) Siemens, the German technology giant, has bagged a QR920m (253m) contract from the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for construction of nine turnkey substations for Phase 11 of Kahramaa's Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion project.

The utility provider's expansion project aims to ensure stable power supply to all sectors including households, business centres, shopping malls, hospitals and schools throughout the capital city Doha and its suburbs.

"Siemens has been a long-standing partner to Kahramaa and this contract strengthens our cooperation further," said Bernhard Fonseka, CEO of Siemens Qatar.

"This project will contribute to improving the power infrastructure in and around Doha, helping the government meet its requirements for achieving its National Vision 2030," he said

Under the contract, Siemens will provide gas-insulated switchgears (GIS), with voltages including 220kV, 132kV and 66kV, for the first stage of the Phase 11 expansion.

Siemens is scheduled to complete the project within 26 months from the award date

Since 2005, Siemens has provided substations for phases V, VI, VII, IX and X of Kahramaa's ambitious project to expand its power supply system.

The expansion plan is devised to meet the growing demand for electricity in Qatar, as the country continues to witness tremendous development and urbanisation. As of June 2013, Siemens had close to 2,000 high-voltage GIS bays installed in Qatar.

"Once again, Siemens presents efficient power transmission solutions that act as the cornerstone of sustainable and eco-friendly energy systems," said Nebojsa Ku-jovic, General Manager of the Power Transmission Division at Siemens Qatar. "By providing switchgear designed to the highest levels of quality, our technology ensures meeting all our customers' requirements of performance and efficiency.

Qatar bought a 2.4bn (3.1bn) stake in Siemens, Germany's second most valuable company, in 2012. The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a broad spectrum of products, services and solutions for power generation in thermal power plants and using renewables, power transmission in grids and for the extrac-tion, processing and transport of oil and gas

In fiscal 2013 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of EUR26.6 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR28.8 billion and posted a profit of approxi-mately EUR2 billion

Qatar's wealth, mostly generated from gas exports, has spurred a population and construction boom over the last decade. The tiny Gulf state's plan to host the World Cup soccer competition in 2022 is expected to put further strain on Doha's power supplies
