Al Ahli’s Brazilian scoring machine Ciel fired home a long range shot to cancel Al Shabab’s early advantage and hold their visitors to a 1-1 draw in the dying minutes of their Group-B final clash at Rashid Stadium here on Monday night. Omer Ali put Al Shabab youngsters ahead in the 48th minute before substitute Ciel saved the situation with a last gasp strike.

In another clash of the Group-B, front runners Al Dhafra cruised to a sweeping 4-0 victory over hapless Emirates to enhance their lead at the top of the table, as Al Nasr beat hosts Al Wasl 3-2 at Zabeel Stadium. Al Dhafra raised their tally to 14 points and are set to play Group-A runners up Al Jazira at home in the western region as Al Ahli have finished second with 13 points and will face Sharjah at the Sharjah Stadium.

However, Al Ahli missed the efforts of their international players Ahmed Khalil, Ismail Al Hammadi, Abdul Aziz Haikal, Abdul Aziz Sanqoor, Waleed Abbas and Majid Hassan who are busy with the senior national team. Meanwhile, Al Shabab’s coach Paqueta administered the match from the grandstand after fielding the reserve string.

Omer Ali, who has scored for Al Shabab said they are delighted with the performance who did everything right to keep pace with a heavyweight side like Al Ahli at their home ground.

“We have implemented the directives of the coach and the tactics worked. The young players proved to be courageous and determined to make their presence felt. I think this is a very good warm up for our next confrontation in the Pro League and we are confident that everything will go well,” he said.

Al Ahli team’s manager Abdul Majeed Hussain said: “We came to win, but in football there’s nothing easy. Our players did well and hopefully we will be able to make it into the final and combine the three major trophies of the season.”
