EU Socialists to Tap Germany's Schulz As Top Election Candidate


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The Party of European Socialists (PES) was due Saturday to tap Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, as their top candidate in May elections for the EU assembly. The nomination - to be formalized at a congress in Rome - will make the 58-year-old, German-born Social Democrat the PES candidate for the post of European Commission president, which EU governments are expected to appoint in June, dpa reported. The PES is a confederation of national European centre-left parties. It is naming an official candidate for the top commission job for the first time, and rival organizations such as the conservative European People's Party (EPP) are due to do the same. Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker - a former chairman of the Eurogroup panel of eurozone finance ministers - is the frontrunner for the EPP nomination, to be announced at a March 6-7 congress in Dubli
