The Community Police Department at the General Headquarters of Abu Dhabi is drawing a new policy to control and regulate the functioning of Internet cafes across the emirate.
According to the Abu Dhabi Police, the new policy will control the misuse of Internet, particularly by the youth.
“There is a dire need to strengthen the awareness of the various segments of society for the proper use of Internet cafes, especially by adolescents and young students who play games online,” said Lt-Colonel Mubarak sin Muhairom, Head of the department.
Internet cafe is an influential community development tool and a useful source of knowledge and culture. “The regulations of the law and stipulated conditions to be followed by those cafes need to be reviewed so as to ensure proper use of the Internet.”
On Friday, the Community Police Department discussed with partners from various departments, entities and institutions the issue of regulating cafes in Abu Dhabi.
The attendees also tackled the best rules that should be enforced so as to provide security and safety to community members who use the Internet at these cafes, and acquaint them with the optimal means to leverage the advantages of Internet use.
Bin Muhairom further said the meeting aimed primarily to ensure cooperation to achieve the goal of protecting the youth against Internet misuse and dangers at these cafes.
“This can be achieved by examining the relevant proposals, and the initiatives are aimed at establishing an authoritative set of rules and regulations for Internet cafes, to prevent any attempts to bend the rules,” explained Bin Muhairom.
Lt-Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre, at the meeting highlighted proposals to curtail controversial behaviours that are contrary to the UAE traditions and ethics via Internet cafes. Ibrahim Al Hosani, Director of Media Licensing Department at the National Media Council, discussed a number of proposals that regulate Internet access hours to protect children, and prevent youngsters from going to Internet cafes late at night, or during school hours.
Sultan Al Sa’adi, Deputy Director of the Labour Inspections Department at the Ministry of Labour, called for organising the licensing process to open such cafes, in coordination with all entities involved in this project.
