Oman to partner with Victoria for food security

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman is working on strategic partnerships with the Australian state of Victoria to ensure food security in the sultanate.

Talking to Muscat Daily, Peter Walsh, Victorian minister for agriculture and food security and also the minister for water said, "This is our first meeting. We are planning and working on the strategies that will help Oman become a food-secure country. We are the largest suppliers of dairy products to Oman. There are several other agricultural products that we can supply throughout the year. We want to ensure a regular supply so that the country is never affected by food scarcity."

He also said that the Victorian government is trying to offer support in terms of training, expertise and grooming. "We have exclusive colleges for research in agriculture and have trained hands who can visit Oman and share their expertise. During the discussions with my Omani counterpart we visualised the huge scope of sharing knowledge and expertise," Walsh added.

"Long-term plans have been discussed in detail and we hope to turn them into a reality soon. Both governments are keen to bring in changes for betterment," he said.

Walsh, director of SPC Limited, a member of the state Food Industry Advisory Council, and a board member of the National Farmers Federation, said he will be visiting Oman more frequently.

Walsh was awarded a centenary medal in 2003 for work towards the environment. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2002, retaining the seat for the National Party after the retirement of long-serving MP Barry Steggall.
