26 million people remain unemployed in EU


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Around 26 million men and women in the EU, of whom 19.17 million were in the euro area, were unemployed in January 2014, according to figures published Friday by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office



Compared with December 2013, the number of persons unemployed increased by 17,000 in both the EU and the euro area. Compared with January 2013, unemployment decreased by 449,000 in the EU, and by 67,000 in the euro area



The euro area unemployment rate was 12 percent in January 2014, stable since October 2013. It was also 12 percent in January 2013

The EU unemployment rate was 10.8 percent in January 2014, stable since October 2013. It was 11 percent in January 2013

Among the EU member states, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria (4.9 percent), Germany (5.0 percent) and Luxembourg (6.1 percent), and the highest in Greece (28.0 percent) and Spain (25.8 percent)



Compared with a year ago, the unemployment rate increased in 13 EU member states fell in 13 and remained stable in two

Meanwhile, Eurostat said that euro area annual inflation is expected to be 0.8 percent in February, stable compared with January
