(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Saudi Foreign Ministry Friday expressed "astonishment and surprise" of Russia's continuous support to the Syrian regime and its obstruction of the UN Security Council's efforts to introduce political solutions to the crisis in Syria
In statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), a Ministry official said Saudi Arabia is "surprised" of the comment made by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry on February 25, in which the name of the Kingdom was mentioned "in an attempt to twist facts and blame it for supporting Syrian people in face of the ugly aggression of the Syrian regime." This regime, added the official, "does not hesitate to use the most powerful military hardware such as tanks and artillery, warplanes and even the prohibited and banned chemical weapons in clear violation of international norms and laws and humanitarian principles." The official questioned the reason behind Moscow's non-stop and staunch backing to the Syrian regime which kills its own people
"In the light of irrefutable and crystal-clear facts, what is surprising and shocking is the continuation of Russia's support to the criminal Syrian regime and its obstruction of all political solutions promoted by the UN Security Council," he said
The official went on to say that Russia continues support to the Syrian regime "even as it attempts to prove a failure Geneva II conference for Syria peace which promises a political solution to the Syrian crisis." "This stance was and still is one of the main factors that encourage the regime in Damascus to continue its aggression and tyranny as well as to keep the bloody Syrian conflict raging for the third year in a row without a glimmer of hope for solution that ends one of the biggest crises and humanitarian ordeals of our contemporary history." He concluded that "in light of the disappointment of the international community's failure to resolve the crisis, Russia's support to the Syrian regime has raised a lot of questions and undoubtedly caused it to lose much of Arab people's sympathy as they feel ultimate betrayal from it.
