(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US expressed Friday "disappointment" towards the Dinka and Nuer political-ethnic groups in South Sudan who have continued fighting after signing a ceasefire agreement in January
"We believe that this agreement offers the best to stop fighting and allow space for the political dialogue that is needed to address the root causes of the conflict," said Department of State Spokesperson, Jen Psaki
"We continue to support the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) negotiations to immediately establish a mechanism to monitor the implementation of the cessation of hostilities agreement," stressed Psaki in a statement
The IGAD talks will continue this week. Both parties are taking a planned recess this evening to consult with their leaders
The South Sudanese conflict began on December 15 after president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir of the Dinka tribe fired his vice president, Riek Machar of the Nuer tribe. These are the two largest ethnic groups in a country where political affiliations are based upon ethnicity
South Sudan is the world's youngest country who declared their independence from Sudan in 2011.
