US concerned by Myanmar"s suspension of aid

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US expressed on Friday concern over the Myanmar government's suspension of medical aid from the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis patients in the country for the past 22 years

"We urge the government to continue to work with the international community to provide humanitarian assistance to communities in need and to ensure unfettered access for humanitarian agencies," said Department of State Spokesperson Jen Psaki

On its website, the MSF stated that it is "deeply shocked by this unilateral decision and extremely concerned about the fate of tens of thousands of patients currently under our care across the country

"This decision by the Union Government will have a devastating impact on the 30,000 HIV/AIDS patients and more than 3,000 tuberculosis patients we are currently treating in Myanmar," MSF stressed

According to Psaki, the government and the MSF are in discussions to resume operations

Since 2004, MSF have treated over 1,240,000 malaria patients in Rakhine state of Myanmar alone
