Iran Plays Pivotal Role In SCO: Top Official Says


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Visiting Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary General Dmitry Mezentsev said here on Wednesday the Islamic Republic of Iran plays an active role in this organization. Mezentsev made the remarks in a meeting held at the Institute of Political and International Studies of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran, reported the Iranian News Agency (IRNA) today. He underlined that Iran enjoys significant potentials that would lead to further expansion of cooperation with the SCO member and observer countries in various areas. With no doubt, Iran is a unique member of SCO, he said, expressing hope that the country could enhance its all-out relations with the organization. The SCO is an intergovernmental security organization founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Iran, India, Mongolia, Afghanistan and Pakistan have an observer status at the organization. Iranian foreign ministry official website reported that Dmitry Fedorovich Mezentsev, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Secretary-General, visited Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif Tuesday evening in Tehran to discuss the organization's current process and its cooperation with Iran. Zarif expressed Iran's will to cooperate with SCO in different fields of business and economy, energy, transportation, and anti-terrorist and anti-extremism activities.
