Mayweather opts for Maidana

(MENAFN- Kora) Mayweather polled his followers on Twitter last month, the majority of whom picked Khan - who beat Maidana in December 2010 to retain his WBA light-welterweight title

Since that loss Maidana, has moved up to welterweight, winning four bouts since losing his bow in the division to Devon Alexander

The Argentinian surprised many by overcoming Adrien Broner for the WBA belt in December, a win that has gone a long way to sealing his bout with the undefeated - and top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world - Mayweather

"Marcos Maidana's last performance immediately brought him to my attention," Mayweather said

"He is an extremely skilled fighter who brings knockout danger to the ring. I think this is a great fight for me and he deserves the opportunity to see if he can do what 45 others have tried to do before him: beat me.

Mayweather's last fight came in September against Saul Alvarez, the 37-year-old comfortably overcoming the Mexican on points

Indeed all bar two of Mayweather's last 10 fights have gone the distance, while Maidana - who has a 35-3 record heading into the fight - has only ever boxed 12 rounds four times in his career - all three of his professional losses have been on judges' decisions
