France Votes to Extend Mission in Central African Republic

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) France's National Assembly on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly in favour of extending a two-month-old military intervention in the Central African Republic.

The news comes two months after France sent 1,600 troops to its former colony to help an African Union force end months of violence between marauding Muslim rebels and Christian vigilante

The French forces on the ground - which have since been expanded to 2,000 troops - and their 5,500 African counterparts, have made progress on disarming the rebels but have failed to rein in the vigilantes, who have chased thousands of Muslims from their homes in recent week

Despite the mixed results, French lawmakers voted by 428 in favour and 14 against to keeping the troops in place until a UN peacekeeping force scheduled to arrive later this year takes over.(
