Clashes Erupt in Al-Aqsa Compound ahead of Knesset Debate

(MENAFN - Qatar News Agency) Tens of Palestinians were injured Tuesday in clashes with the Israeli forces which broke into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in al-Quds (Jerusalem) to disperse Palestinian protesters.



The Israeli soldiers fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at the people who were praying at the mosqu



At least 20 people, including children, were wounded in the violenc



The Israeli police spokesman added that there was "high tension" ahead of discussions in Knesset later Tuesday of a plan to annex the sit



The Knesset is scheduled to discuss a bill proposal by Likud MK Moshe Feiglin seeking to apply Israeli sovereignty on the site considered holy by Jews, Muslims and Christian



No vote is expected at the end of the debat



Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he is opposed Feiglin's initiative, and political commentators say the bill does not have sufficient support to pas



Al-Aqsa compound is Islam's third-holiest site after Makkah and Medina in Saudi Arabi



In recent months, Israeli forces and settlers have stepped up their attacks on the mosqu



This has led to violent confrontations between the two side



Earlier in the month, clashes erupted between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli soldiers at the mosque. The clashes broke out when Israeli forces stormed the holy site in East Al-Quds during the Friday prayer. The Palestinian Authority and the resistance movement of Hamas have warned against Israeli plans to impose "sovereignty" on Al-Aqsa Mosque.
