Football Fives World Championship Starts in April

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The qualifying rounds for Football Fives World Championship (F5WC) will be held on weekends in April and May here in Doha, officials announced Tuesday. Officials from Qatar Lubricants Company (QALCO), the sponsors of the tournament, announced details of the event today. The F5WC brings together a global initiative to select talented amateur football players through regional 5-a-side qualifying rounds to then compete in the Dubai 2014 finals. A group stage of the tournament will be held and winners will then proceed to the finals in Dubai where 32 teams will compete. The winners will bag an all-expenses paid trip to Dubai including three nights stay at the Marriott Hotel from June 12 to 14, where they will compete against 31 other countries at the Dubai World Trade Centre, officials said. The qualifying rounds for the amateur football championship aim to spot aspiring male footballers over 16 years who are not professionally registered with any football club in Qatar. The tournament aims to find undiscovered talent and gives a platform for professional football clubs to scout and sign up this talent. Speaking to the media, QALCO Chairman HE Sheikh Sultan bin Jassim Al Thani said, "QALCO steadfastly supports Qatar National Vision 2030 and innovative sports ideas. Our initiative is in line with the milestone that we hope to achieve for Qatar in the world of sports by the year 2030." This commitment is based on the conviction that sports can improve the outlook of the youth by teaching them teamwork, perseverance, dedication, and responsibility, he said. QALCO Managing Director Fawad Rana said, "QALCO identified football as one of the key platforms to communicate its core brand message. We recognize that football acts as a common thread for people in Qatar irrespective of nationality, culture and language." Qatar Football Association (QFA) supports this tournament. It is providing venues and referees. QFA's support for this tournament demonstrates QFA's social responsibility to spread the game of football in the community, QFA said. Player registration is now open for the tournament. Details available at www.F5WC.com
