Morgenstern calls end to World Cup season

(MENAFN- Kora) The 27-year-old had started the FIS ski jumping World Cup season well with one win and four podium finishes, before a crash during a training jump in January saw him admitted to intensive care with a serious cranial injury and lung contusion

He made a return in time to compete at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, collecting a silver medal in the team event with Austria, yet that will be his final competitive action this season

Morgenstern, a three-time Olympic champion at previous Games, has chosen to rest for the remainder of the World Cup campaign

"My health is now the priority; my goal is to recover and continue the therapy," he said on his official website

"The past weeks (have been) emotionally very intense for me. Now I want to come to terms with the experiences and arrange my thoughts

"That's why I decided to not take part in the rest of the competitions this season

"Considering what happened before, the Olympic Games were wonderful for me. I'm happy and grateful that my dream came true and I enjoyed every minute

"I did my best until the very end, improved step by step and my last jump in Sochi was my best one there. The silver medal is worth more than gold for me and will get a special place at home.

Morgenstern had been in contention at the top of the World Cup rankings before his accident, but has dropped to 11th overall following his spell on the sidelines
