(MENAFNEditorial) HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Culture, Youth, and Social Development, praised UAE's efforts in supporting cancer patients, and making available the best and most scientifically advanced medical care to mitigate cancer's impact on patients, their families, and society.
Sheikh Nahyan also praised the distinctive efforts exerted by specialized cancer bodies and entities in this regard, particularly the Friends of Cancer Patients society
This came during His Highness's meeting with Cary Adams, CEO of the Union for International Cancer Control, who is heading a visiting UICC delegation to the UAE, with the goal to explore the latest advances in cancer technology to support cancer patients, and the efforts to create a unified UAE National Cancer Registry. His Highness welcomed the delegation at Abu Dhabi, in the presence of the Friends of Cancer Patients society
In addition to Mr. Adams, UICC's delegation consisted of Isabel Mestres, Head of External Relations and Business Development, Lorena Framis, External Relations and Business Development Manager and Dr Samia Al Amoudi, Professor at King Abdul Aziz University, Member of UICC's board of directors, and CEO of Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer. The delegation was accompanied by Ameera Binkaram, President of the Board of Trustees and a founding member of the Friends of Cancer Patients society and Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, Secretary General for Friends of Cancer Patients society
Speaking on the occasion, UICC CEO Cary Adams said: "We visited a number of medical facilities in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and were impressed by the latest developments on the long road ahead. We commend the efforts aimed at the creation of a unified UAE National Cancer Registry. A cancer registry is an absolute building block, as it helps to understand the exact nature of the burden of cancer, sheds light on the type of cancers that are emerging in specific areas or throughout the country and therefore enables in the development of counter-measures. At a later stage, a cancer registry will enable in measuring the impact of implementing policies.
The Union for International Cancer Control delegation also visited a number of important facilities, starting with Masdar, where they explored the latest projects in sustainability and clean energy. The delegation's visit to Masdar focused on the advanced technical labs, especially those specialized in optimum medical care in accordance with the most advanced international standards
The delegation also visited the University Hospital Sharjah where they explored the various medical facilities, and the newly established pediatrics cancer unit. It also visited the Clinical and Surgery Center, the Newborn Surgery Center, and the Medical Staff Training Center, which is one of the largest training centers in the Middle East. The delegation also visited other Sharjah University facilities, and met medical and managerial staff. The delegation expressed interest in the latest advances in medical care in the UAE, affirming that this would not be the last visit to the country. The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Abdelaziz Saeed Bin Butti Al Mheiri, Director of Sharjah Health Authority, and Member of the Board of Directors of University Hospital Sharjah, Prof. Hossam Hamdi, Vice Chancellor for Medical and Health Sciences Colleges at University Hospital Sharjah, and Prof. Hakam Yaseen, Medical Director at University Hospital Sharjah
The Union for International Cancer Control, headquartered in Geneva, was established in 1933, with the goal of enhancing cancer control. Over 760 organizations from 155 countries are UICC members. UICC launched the 'World Cancer Declaration Ambassadors Program', aiming at rallying support from international figures for its efforts to raise funds and achieve the Declaration's goals by 2020
