Kings miss chance, Perth beat Melbourne

(MENAFN- Kora) Sydney knew they could leapfrog the third-placed Melbourne Tigers if they managed to defeat the Cairns Taipans on Friday and the Townsville Crocodiles on Saturday but failed to complete the second leg

Brian Conklin (27 points) and Todd Blanchfield (15 points, 10 rebounds) inspired bottom side Townsville to a 90-83 win over Sydney, ensuring the Kings remain fourth in the NBL

On Friday, the Kings burst away from Cairns in the first half, scoring 43 points to 27 to set up an 85-63 win but they could not repeat that performance at the Townsville Entertainment Centre

Sam Young (18 points) led the way for Sydney against the Taipans, while the American small forward scored 27 points against the Crocodiles

The NBL-leading Perth Wildcats had beaten Melbourne 87-75 on Friday to give Sydney the opportunity to move above the Tigers

In other NBL results, the New Zealand Breakers lost two games, going down to the Wollongong Hawks 88-68 and the Adelaide 36ers 96-92
