Qatar Welcomes Approval of UNSC Resolution on Aid to Syria

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The State of Qatar has welcomed the approval of UN Security Council to the Arab -Western resolution on the humanitarian situation in Syria, saying it was the first resolution approved unanimously by the UN Security Council to deal with the tragic situation facing the Syrian people. In a press statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) today, an official source at the Foreign Ministry said the resolution was a first step in the right direction as it blamed the Syrian regime for the deteriorating humanitarian situation and forced the regime to implement the provisions of the resolution in order to put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people. The source expressed Qatar's appreciation to the role played by the three countries which submitted the draft resolution, namely Jordan, Australia and Luxembourg. Qatar, he said, did not spare any effort in bringing together the negotiators viewpoints while communicating with the negotiation parties. The source called on the UN Security Council to continue such efforts and take the necessary steps in the event of non-compliance with the provisions of the resolution. He said that the international community should fulfill its obligations toward Syrian people in accordance with international humanitarian law so as to ease their suffering. The State of Qatar, he said, had warned of the worsening humanitarian crisis and had demanded the Arab ministerial meeting which was held last November to submit an Arab resolution to the UN Security Council. That ministerial meeting mandated the Arab group at the United Nations to take the necessary measures to submit a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities by providing all forms of emergency relief for the civilians in Syria and protecting them from all threats that endanger their lives.
