135 kg rotten food seized

(MENAFN -Arab News) As part of its efforts to ensure a supply of healthy food to consumers, the East Dammam municipality intensified raids on restaurants and other food outlets last week

During surprise visits, municipal inspectors closed five commercial establishments, seized more than 135 kg of rotten food and registered 295 violations, Chairman of the East Dammam Municipality Abdullah Al-Ahmed said

?Municipal inspectors made surprise visits to restaurants and markets for comprehensive checks and rectification of violations,? Al-Ahmed said

The inspectors booked 295 violations including absence of licenses to run shops and restaurant workers without health cards besides wrong practices followed in cooking and serving food. They also seized and destroyed large quantities of food items unfit for human consumption and 24 pieces of equipment not in compliance with hygienic standards. The inspectors also fined the violators SR139,700, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The inspecting teams comprising five supervisors and 18 inspectors made 167 visits, Al-Ahmed said, adding that their inspections will continue in the coming weeks

In related news, he said that the municipal cleaners disposed of 86,000 square meters of building waste which were deposited in some districts by unidentified workers

He also said that the municipality had planted 200,000 flowering plants and repaired green surfaces and trees on roads.
