Ban on S. African red meat lifted

(MENAFN) South African authorities confirmed that the three-year ban on red meat has been lifted, Xinhua reported

The South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) said that the ban was lifted after the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) announced that South Africa has become free of the foot-and-mouth disease

OIE Director General wrote to DAFF: "I am pleased to inform you that the status of its foot and mouth-free zone... is thus re-instated as of 14 February 2014 for the zone of South Africa... I congratulate you for the very positive achievement on the foot and mouth situation in your country.

The ban on South African red meat was imposed three years ago following a foot and mouth disease outbreak, causing the country to lose USD360 million a year
