Oman conference discusses ballast water, invasive marine species

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Environment experts and researchers from across the globe are participating in the first international conference by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA), in collaboration with Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society, to discuss marine invasive species.

Titled ‘Marine Invasive Species: Management of Ballast Water and other Vectors', the three-day conference is being held at Al Bandar Hotel of Shangri-La's Barr al Jissah Resort & Spa. It was inaugurated by H E Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi, Minister of Interior, on Monday.

To maintain stability during transit, ships fill their ballast tanks with water.

This water is transported to the next port of call, where it is discharged. This can introduce foreign species into territorial waters which could have detrimental effects.

Ali bin Amer Kiyumi, director general of nature conservation, MECA, said, ''Our particular focus at the moment is marine conservation and ballast water management is a powerful solution, environmentally and economically. It is a complex issue that takes into account the challenges of international maritime laws and shipping operations.''
