Fisherman injured by stingray airlifted to Salalah in Oman by EU Navfor

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A fisherman was airlifted for medical treatment to Salalah recently after being rescued off the Somali coast by forces attached to the EU Navfor counter-piracy mission in the region.

The man was working on a Korean fishing vessel when he got injured by a stingray.

The EU mission got to know of the incident after a distress call was relayed by the Korean Navy warship, Kang Gam Chang, to the EU flagship, FS Siroco. EU Force Commander, Rear Admiral Herve Bléjean, sent a medical team by boat to assess the man's injuries after which he was airlifted by helicopter to the FS Siroco, where his condition was stabilised.

Shortly afterwards, he was transferred to FGS Hessen and to the waiting medical surgery team on board. The surgeon on board the German frigate operated on the wounded patient and then transferred him to a hospital in Salalah for further treatment.

Rear Admiral Bléjean said this week has once again shown that EU warships stand ready to assist mariners in distress. ''Without our assistance, this fisherman would have died.''

The incident which took place on February 13, is the second rescue-at-sea performed by EU Navfor after it rescued a 14 year old Somali national just 24 hours before.
