News Corp receives USD800m tax rebate

(MENAFN) Australian operations by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp received a USD800 million tax rebate from the government, The Peninsula Qatar reported

The payout to News Corp was related to complex shuffling of assets through local and overseas businesses in 1989 that got the firm a tax deduction of USD1.8 billion

The payout was an important element of the USD15.36 billion spending blowout unveiled by the new government in December.

Australia's Federal Court said that News Corp is to be allowed to claim the deduction and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) had 28 days to decide to appeal
