(MENAFN- Arab Times) Fifteen-year-old Karan Bhasin created a sensation by winning the prestigious 'Liberation Cup 2014' Toyo Tires Golf Tournament, organized last Friday at the Sahara Golf Club. In a keenly-contested event, he stood his ground against more experienced and senior players, and came up with a superlative score of 39 to take the trophy. Karan was followed by Nadeem Shafi and Sarah Butler, both on 33 points, but it was the former who was declared second on the basis of count-back. The coveted prize for Best Gross was won by Aziz Sarawi, who came up with a remarkable score of 74. The prize for Longest Drive - Mens' was won by Omar Shafi, whereas the corresponding prize in the ladies' category was won by Gemma Hendriks. Finally the prizes for Nearest to Pin in Men's and Ladies' category were won by H.S. Seo and D.S. Shin respectively

It was the 30th year of this prestigious event, which started in 1983 and since then has been organized each year with the exception of the year of invasion. An important fixture in the annual golf calendar of Kuwait, the tournament has always attracted keen golfers from all over. This year the event had participation by 100 players from diverse backgrounds and different nationalities. A striking feature of Golf is that it is the only sport which allows players of varying skill levels, age groups and both genders to come together and play on a single platform, with the handicap system ensuring a level playing field

The weather was wonderful on Friday with bright sunny conditions and a light, cool breeze, all of which contributed to a good game of golf. As in earlier years, the game was played in the 'Stableford' format, in which scoring is based on the number of strokes taken on each hole relative to the hole's par. The tee-off commenced at 8:30 am using the shotgun approach and since the Stableford format allows for relatively speedy play, the game finished at 1:30 pm. This was followed by prize distribution and a sumptuous lunch for the players & their families

Speaking on the occasion, Kuldeep Lamba, Managing Director, Al Mailem Group expressed his satisfaction at the large turnout. "We have been organizing Toyo Tires Tournament for the last 30 years and have been overwhelmed by the positive response it has received over the years", he added, "I would particularly like to thank Kanji Kasai and Hisashi Takahara of Toyo who have specially flown down here for this event, and it has been Toyo's unwavering support which has made it possible for us to successfully conduct this event for the last so many years." He complimented the Sahara Club officials for their professional handling of the event, and expressed hope that the tournament would continue to receive the same level of enthusiastic response in future also
