An Indian schoolgirl, who was reported to have fallen to her death from the 17th floor of Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), allegedly committed suicide after being caught cheating in exams by her teacher, the Dubai Police said on Sunday.
The body of the 14-year-old girl was discovered on Friday by a Bangladeshi cleaner, who informed the Operations Room of the Dubai Police. Officers rushed to the site, where the cleaner told the police that he was shocked to see the body while passing by.
Prima facie investigations revealed that on the day of the incident, the 14-year-old girl was caught by her teacher while cheating in exams. The teacher warned her that she would be terminated if she was caught cheating again.
“Her parents told us that when she returned home, she was distraught and very upset. Her father, who came to know about the cheating, also chided her. She went to her room and locked the door, after which the family heard some sound,” a police officer said.
The family came to know about her death only after the police arrived at the scene.
The family went into a state of shock on seeing her body on the pavement below. Her mother became hysterical, the police said. The police have recorded the incident as suicide and transferred the body to the General Department of Forensic Medicine. The police urged families to be careful when they deal with children.
