UK minister praises Oman for its religious tolerance


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The UK's Minister for Faith and Communities has praised Oman for its religious tolerance.


Speaking during a briefing at the British Ambassadors' residence on Monday evening, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Senior Minister of State at the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Minister for Faith and Communities, said that Oman is ''distinctly beautiful'' for allowing people of different faiths to practise together.


Baroness Sayeeda, who is on her first visit to Oman, will deliver a speech on Tuesday at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque on 'Christian-Muslim Ties and Islamic Funding'. She will also deliver speeches at other locations.


''It is an honour to get an opportunity to be at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and speak about interfaith. Oman has a great history, and it is an oasis of interfaith and intrafaith. People practice in harmony and I find that most amazing. This needs to be spread all over the region,'' Baroness Sayeeda said.


''I have come to Oman hoping that these kinds of visits create greater understanding. It is very encouraging to see that there are no sectarian differences here and people can pray together.'' She said the UK has a ''unique'' position in understanding Islam.


''I was once attacked by an extremist group. They accused me of not dressing properly because my head was not covered. I believe that was a wrong perception. If we look at teachings, it shows that human rights and Islamic principles go hand in hand. There is no conflict between Islam and human rig
