(MENAFN- The Peninsula) As part of its five-year strategy, Katara yesterday announced a QR600,000 annual Award for handicraft and traditional industries under the umbrella of public heritage
The award is the second such initiative by Katara following the announcement of the $200,000 Award for Arabic novel recently
The new award for handicraft and traditional works is aimed at honouring artisans and encouraging innovation and continuous production of crafts and traditional works as well as developing their skills in different areas of arts and crafts
The award was also established to give craftsmen and those involved in the production of traditional works the status they deserve and provide them chance to take part in exhibitions and related events in Qatar, the GCC and at international level
Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti said the launch of this award shows the attention Katara gives to different fields characterised by creativity and innovation in the society
"We care for handicraft professionals and innovators and we are keen to let them participate in different events and festivals organized by Katara. It is time to honour them and their contribution through this award which will provide an incentive for them to encourage creativity and production," he said
The annual award will cover areas such as engraving, embroidery, weaving, woodwork, jewellery, and traditional clothes. The award will be under a special committee to grant the award based on a set of criteria and conditions
Dr Al Sulaiti added that the award is expected to encourage and develop the handicraft and traditional industries, introduce the excellent works of artisans and promote exchange of knowledge and experience on latest techniques and materials in production
The award, which is the first of its kind in Qatar, will also help create a database of these products, contribute to enrich traditional heritage and consolidate national identity, he added
