(MENAFN - Arab News) A man in his 30s has died at a private hospital in Jeddah after being infected with a virus for which medication was only available at specialty hospitals
Majid Wali was initially admitted to a hospital in Makkah for a simple cough and was diagnosed with inflammation of the air valves. Doctors found no indication of the existence of a virus in his respiratory system. His coughing, however, continued and the hospital discontinued his treatment after four days
The patient was then referred to another private hospital in Jeddah, where an X-ray revealed large, white spots in the lungs. Majid was informed that there was an only 40 percent survival rate for such cases
"The hospital needed to give him a drug, which is only available at a specialty hospital. The hospital made several attempts to get the drug, but by the time it arrived, Majid was dead," a relative said.
Jeddah Health Affairs Director Dr. Sami Badawood said that the doctors treating the patient had erred in their initial diagnosis
Majid's relatives were told to find a mortuary for bodies that have suffered from viruses or infectious diseases. They eventually found one in Makkah
Majid was a 32-year-old regional manager at a company in Makkah. He is survived by three children, the eldest of whom is nine years old
