(MENAFN -Arab News) I have the impression that many human beings, if not most, move through life in total unawareness. They grow up and go around without ever wondering about the meaning of what they are doing. They live day after day after day in a sort of dream, automatically, with neither will nor desire to find out what it is all about, what they are actually achieving

People are certainly aware of their physical and material achievements. They know what the state of their health and finances is. They take good care of themselves (at least some do!) by eating good food, by entertaining themselves in pleasant ways. They work and earn money, they have a comfortable house and a nice car, friends, and most of the things that make the human existence quite bearable.

But how much do they know about their psychological, emotional and spiritual situation? They probably limit themselves to experiencing different feelings, according to the situation, without thinking about their implications

Have “you” ever asked yourself, “Where am I right now?” You are acceptably satisfied with your status, with your social life and material situation in general. But… are you intimately fulfilled? Explore your deeper self and see what you find. Look at your family relationships, examine what they are and the importance they have in your life.

Check out if you are giving your dear ones what you should, what it is your duty, what they expect from you. You might believe you are, while you are not, maybe you never bothered to find out how they feel about your attitude and behavior. On the other hand, you might also have a look at the way “they” behave toward you. Giving is important and so is receiving.

There are individuals who seem to believe that they are entitled to be given love, attention, help, support, dedication, devotion, faithfulness, without ever reciprocating. They expect others to be loving and patient, generous and accepting, while they behave in a selfish or aggressive way

If you realize that, at this point of your life, you need to make a sort of inventory of you emotional and spiritual “assets”, start paying more attention to your deeper feelings. You need to discover if you are fulfilled with the way you treat others and they way you are treated by them. Too often are we pushed to believe that the feelings of others are more important than our own. I do not hink it is so.

I still remember a friend telling me that, when she was little, she had been taught that she should always put herself last. If she was offered a cake or a fruit, it was her “duty” — as a good selfless girl – to choose and take the smallest or less appealing one, so that others could have the best. She grew up feeling that she did not “deserve” to have the good things that life was offering. She never put herself first and ended up being taken advantage of, throughout her whole existence, until she “woke up”.

One day, all of a sudden, she had a miraculous “awakening”. By simply seeing her name printed on a business card (that she has previously unconsciously seen many times!) she realized that she was “somebody” and not a “nobody” as she had been brought to believe for years.

She realized that she had rights beside duties. She felt as if a heavy burden had fallen off her shoulders and started to see herself as a new person, one who deserved to start “receiving”, after having “given” all her life

You might like to find out what your actual situation is, to see if you have been mainly a giver or a receiver, if you have treated others the way you expected to be treated by them, if you have given and received love in equal measure. Feeling fulfilled is just this: Having the sensation that Life has been fair to you. Being treated fairly is a beautiful dream, isn’t it? Most times it remains just a dream.

We all know that, usually, Life is not “fair”, as it is neither logical nor balanced. Yet, once you become aware of the situation, of your innermost needs, you can do something, we can “change” something — at least to a certain extent. What is important for you is to never feel defeated, to see yourself as a victim of fate, to believe that yours is a lost cause. Once you open your eyes and detect what has been hidden in your spirit for so long, you can start “asking” and expect to be given
