Samba school drops plan to don Anonymous masks

(MENAFN- AFP) A Rio samba school says it has scrapped plans to perform at Carnival in Anonymous protest movement masks following the death of a TV cameraman in a march in the city."I'd be ashamed to take part in a protest after what happened," choreographer Alexandre Louzada of the prestigious Portela samba school said, according to Friday's edition of the Rio daily O Dia.He was referring to last week's death of Santiago Andrade, hit by a flare during a violent protest against bus fare increases.Instead, the school's dancers will parade in Rio's famous Sambodrome bearing banners to symbolise the "voice of the street" rather than highlight Anonymous, a key group using social media to draw people to demonstrations.Louzada added that the Portela school would also pay tribute to the cameraman during its Carnival performance between February 28 and March 4.Anonymous led calls for a another protest march Thursday, which drew barely 1,000 people. It was peaceful, unlike the demonstration last week in which the cameraman suffered a fatal head injury.
