EU Reluctant to Impose Sanctions on Ukraine

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Talks about Ukraine were on the agenda of the European foreign ministers' monthly meeting in Brussels on February 10. Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic Lubomir Zaoralek said it is unacceptable to see human rights being violated at the borders of the European Union. Zaoralek said that "we must be ready to impose sanctions on Ukraine if the government persists in using violence against protesters." However, the 28 EU member states finally decided to continue the process of dialogues instead of sanctions. Last night European High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said that the "European Union stands ready to support the process of dialogue, which is so important to putting an end to the situation there, and we stand ready to help with the reforms that need to be made, with economic support." At the end of the meeting nothing had changed: The EU urged all sides to seek, through an inclusive dialogue, a democratic solution that would meet the aspirations of the Ukrainian people. The Council of the European Union € including the 28 EU member states € also decided that some European experts will be provided on the ground to support Ukrainian government in different areas. Last month some European members raised the issue of sanctions. For example Carl Bildt, the Swedish foreign minister, said on January 20 he wouldn't exclude sanctions , "we'll have to see what happens." Poland also has called for more direct action
