Tokyo Governor Election Kicks Off

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Voters in Tokyo are casting ballots on Sunday to decide the capital's new governor.

They are choosing the successor to Naoki Inose, who resigned in December over a money scandal. 16 candidates are vying for the post.

They have campaigned on medical and welfare services for the city's aging population and discussed policies for the economy, employment, and energy, including nuclear power.

The candidates also explained how Tokyo should prepare for a massive earthquake.

Most candidates are running as independents. More than 10 million people are eligible to vote at 1,869 polling stations.

Polling stations close at 20:00 (11:00 GMT), with exit polls expected shortly afterwards. The post of Tokyo governor became vacant in December when Naoki Inose stepped down after admitting he had been wrong to accept an undeclared 50m yen ($500,000) from a scandal-hit hospital tycoon

The new governor is expected to spend much of his time preparing for the 2020 Summer Olympics, with construction projects and the renovation of the city's infrastructure already under way
