Lufthansa set to expand network in Middle East


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) "It was again a record year for Lufthansa in the Middle East. All in all Lufthansa Group offered flights to more than 104 million guests in 2013," said Carsten Schaeffer, Vice President Sales and Services Southeast Europe, Middle East and Africa



The latest regional figures reflect an increase of more than 10 per cent compared to 2012 and a trust bestowed on the airline specifically for its attractive fares on premium services and easy connections, he said at a Press conference



"The UAE has been part of Lufthansa's network for more than 35 years - a long period and passengers can rely on Lufthansa delivering the service that we are known for and take them to their destinations in utmost convenience and comfort," said Schaeffer as he introduced the carrier's new general manager to the UAE



"Especially our 20 per cent capacity increase during this summer, which was announced at the Arabian Travel market last May, has paid off perfectly - a nice achievement our new UAE general manager Karsten Zang can build on," said Schaeffer



Zang will also be director for Gulf and Pakistan. He follows Peter Pollak who has been promoted to a new job at in Frankfurt



"Karsten has a vast experience in managing emerging markets therefore we are welcoming an experienced Lufthansa manager who has shown how to successfully orchestrate sales in globally challenging times," said Schaeffer. "We bid farewell to a dear colleague who has been working diligently over the last years in Dubai. Peter and his team have ensured that Lufthansa's services have found loyal and pleased customers," he said



Lufthansa names new chief executiv



FRANKFURT - Lufthansa named Carsten Spohr, currently head of its passenger business, to take over as its new chief executive in May



"The supervisory board of Deutsche Lufthansa has appointed Carsten Spohr as the future chairman of the executive board and chief executive officer during a meeting" on Friday, the airline said in a statement. The 47-year-old "will assume his new role effective May 1, 2014.



The current CEO, Christoph Franz, 53, announced last September that he would not be available for an extension of his contract after it expires in May



He is moving to Swiss pharmaceuticals giant Roche. - AF



Schaeffer said Lufthansa's network would grow further in the Middle East. With more than 140 weekly flights from 14 destinations it is the largest programme ever performed



"We are looking back on more than 50 years of flying to the Middle East and right after the start of Lufthansa in 1955 this region became very important for being connected to Europe and America - building on this heritage is an important pillar of our services here. We will soon see more important milestones till we are celebrating 60 years of flying to the region," Schaeffer added



Zang said Lufthansa committed itself to invest one million euro every day (excluding the new airplane orders) till 2015 in better-ground and onboard services. "New seats in all classes, individual inflight entertainment in Economy Class, innovative First Class and Business Class as well as brand new lounges, will help us define new industry standards," explained Zang



New highlights to be introduced this year will be Lufthansa's new Premium Economy Class on all long-haul airplanes as well as inflight entertainment solution on short- haul flights, he said



The latest aircraft orders from Lufthansa stand at 295 airplanes from the new Bombardier C-Series to the world longest, the Boeing 747-8, and the world largest airplane, the Airbus A380. In total Lufthansa is investing more than ‚¬36 billion at list prices till 2025
