Seminar calls for strategy to reduce the number of expatriates in Oman


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Experts have called for a national strategy to bring down the percentage of expatriates in Oman from the current 44 per cent to 33 per cent, as directed by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.


This was suggested at the day-long seminar, titled, ‘Expatriates?KDemographic and Economic Challenges' on Wednesday.


The seminar also called for rules to supervise manpower in the sultanate.


''According to the latest figures by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the number of expatriates in Oman has reached around 1.74mn (44 per cent of total population),'' said Dr Abdullah al Ghailani, an expert in strategic affairs.


''Studies show that 37,000 administrative posts, such as managers and general managers, in Oman are occupied by expatriates.''


Meanwhile, the seminar also focussed on crimes. ''Crimes by expats increased by 37 per cent from 2001 to 2012,'' according to Col Muhsin Awadh al Muqaddam, assistant director general, Intelligence and Criminal Investigations Department, ROP.


Another speaker, Saud al Habsi, chairman of the Human Resources Committee, State Council, said, ''Vision 2020's target is to make Omanisation reach 75 per cent, but we still have not exceeded 14 per cent.''


According to Salim Naseer al Hadhrami, director general of planning and development, Ministry of Manpower, 118,000 expatriates were issued job visas last year.
