(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) In an aim to raise awareness on Alzheimer's disease, the Ageing and Dementia Research Group at the Sultan Qaboos University will organise a walkathon at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher on March 5.
It is being organised in collaboration with the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and Oman Alzheimer's' Society.
This is the second year that a walkathon is being organised to raise awareness on reasons and symptoms of the disease. The event will also address issues on road safety.
Dr Mohammed Essa, principal investigator of Ageing and Dementia Research Group said, ''There is no proper data on the number of people suffering from the disease. However, the number of people suffering from the disease worldwide has been growing over the years.''
Dr Essa said that an awareness campaign on road accidents will also be held. ''Brain injuries caused during road accidents also result in Alzheimer's. More than 1,500 people are expected to take part in this year's walkathon. We are also targeting more schools this year to create awareness about the issue.
''Last year, students from only Indian schools took part in the event. This year we are expecting participation of students from Omani and other international schools in the city,'' he added.
