(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) The Oman Cancer Association (OCA) on Tuesday organised a hug a bear party' for children of The Royal Hospital's oncology centre and Dar al Hanan.
Dar al Hanan serves as a temporary home for children from outside Muscat governorate undergoing treatment for cancer.
The event, which marked World Cancer Day, was also attended by parents, staff members of The Royal Hospital, and Yuthar al Rawahy, chairperson, OCA.
Four children were unable to attend the event due to their illness.
The children played games and were entertained by a magic show. They were given gifts to cheer them up.
Yuthar said, ''These children usually don't go out of the hospital. The idea was to entertain them so that they can forget about their illness for a while. It gives us great pleasure to see them happy.
''We began an initiative last year in which the children were asked to make a wish and we tried to fulfil them. We will do it again this year.''
According to an official at the hospital, 26 children are currently admitted in the paediatric ward of the oncology centre.
Of the 1,187 cases of cancer reported among Omanis during 2011, 87 were among children aged 14 years and below, constituting 7.3 per cent of the total.
