US car market hit by bad weather

(MENAFN) The cold weather and snowstorms that swooped across the US have caused car sales in the country to fall in the month of January, The Peninsula Qatar reported

Usually, January records the weakest sales during the year as showrooms empty out after year-end sales in the month before it, but severe weather conditions have caused sales to drop further

General Motors is expecting total car sales in the US to drop to 15.3 million last month from 15.6 million in the month before it. GM's sales fell 12 percent in January, hitting 171,486 units, partially due to planned reductions in low-margin sales to rental car companies

Ford and Toyota sales in the US plunged seven percent each to 154,644 units and 146,365 units, respectively

Chrysler, on the other hand, had its sales increase eight percent to 127,183 vehicles in its best January sales since 2008. Chrysler sales chief said: "The bad weather only seemed to affect our competitors' stores as we had a great January.
