(MENAFN - Kora) Spanish seventh seed Garcia-Lopez battled from a break down in the third set to overcome German Julian Reister 3-6 6-4 6-4 on the clay courts in Vina del Mar.
Garcia-Lopez may have been off court quicker than the two hours and 40 minutes the clash lasted if he had taken his chances in the first.
The world number 56 squandered 11 break points and Reister took one of his eight in the eighth game to surprisingly take the first set at the ATP 250 event.
Of the 11 Garcia-Lopez had, eight were wasted in a marathon 25-point fifth game.
The second set saw seven breaks of serve, but the key one went in Garcia-Lopez's favour in the 10th game.
Both players had chances early in the third and it was Reister who took his in the seventh game to go 4-3 up.
But he handed it straight back and then dropped serve once more in the 10th game to see Garcia-Lopez battle through.
Garcia-Lopez will face the winner of the clash between Italian Paolo Lorenzi and Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez in the second round.
Argentine Mayer was far more comfortable in his 7-5 7-5 victory over Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer.
He too was lucky to escape after wasting his opportunities, but converting three of 20 break points proved to be enough.
Mayer will face Spanish second seed Tommy Robredo, who had a bye, in the second round.
