Oman among four countries picked by AFC for pilot refereeing project

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman is one of only four countries picked recently by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as part of a refereeing development project.

India, Jordan and Myanmar are the other three countries selected for the pilot project.

The AFC will help the national football associations of these countries get started with a refereeing development drive over the next two years.

Representatives from the Oman Football Association (OFA) and the AFC, including the AFC's head of referees operations, Abdul Razak Anuar, met recently in Muscat to discuss how to take the project forward.

The meeting was attended by Ahmed al Habsi, OFA competitions committee chairman, Hameed al Jabri, OFA referees' committee head, Salim al Battashi, OFA director of referees, Omar Abu Loum, OFA referees' technical director, Ali al Qasmi, OFA referees' development officer, and Jose Maria, OFA referees' technical consultant.

They also followed up on a quarterly report submitted by the OFA's refereeing department on various issues related to refereeing in Oman.

At the meeting, they discussed keeping the Omantel Professional League (OPL) in the loop on the issue of refereeing development.

Habsi told the AFC's website, ''The OPL has employed a coordinator to work with the referees' department of the OFA. The league has implemented a better allowance system for referees who officiate in OPL games. Also, from now on, match officials would have to report at the venue a day before the game instead of arriving there on matchday.''

Habsi said the OPL has roped in a German company as a consultant to improve on the players' online registration procedure. It would also include the registration of referees.

He said the OPL has suggested that only FIFA-registered match officials should be considered for the AFC's pilot project.
