58 coaches of Oman Sail take part in intensive training programme

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman Sail successfully held its first winter sailing camp for coaches earlier last week in Mussanah. The one-week session took 58 coaches from Sailing Schools in Marina Bandar Rowdha, Musannah, Sur and The Wave, Muscat through a training that included both onshore and offshore activities to improve their sailing skills and enhance their coaching knowledge.

Rashid al Kindi, Oman Sail's national race team manager, said ''Oman Sail has huge sailing ambitions and our coaches play an integral role in rekindling the nation's maritime history and achieving our objectives. It is essential that our coaches are equipped with the right skills to effectively train the future sailing generation of Oman and to keep young sailors interested in the sport''.

He added, ''This sailing camp is one of many intensive coaching programs that are designed to improve the skills of our coaches. The success of the camp was the result of the hard work and dedication of our organization team who did a splendid job organizing the event and ensuring that everyone enjoyed the experience.''

Participants were split into three groups to allow them to learn from their peers. The morning was dedicated to onshore sessions that covered a variety of soft and hard skills that included instruction on race management, coaching techniques, effective communication and key stages of development. They were also shown how to run effective coaching sessions using techniques such as warm-up games, sailing orientated quizzes and puzzles to keep youngsters entertained ashore when conditions are not suitable for sailing.

In the afternoon of each day, the groups were split into three different groups again. One group gained experience in Laser Radials and were involved in race development sessions, another group were in Quba's and focused on effective session management and sailor progression, and the final group were in double handers and Hobie 16's with the emphasis on personal development. The highlight of the week saw the coaches racing in the final afternoon's regatta.

Each sailing school had entries in RS Visions, Hobie 16's, Quba's and Laser Radials. The racing was extremely tight. Winners were Ahmed al Quasmi and Hamed al Subi from Musannah (RS Vision), Sultan al Balushi and Maryam al Zadjali from Musannah (Hobie 16), Saleh al Oraimi from Sur (Quba) and Rami al Araimi from Marina Bandar Rowda (Laser Radial).

Oman Sail has four sailing schools across the country in Marina Bandar Rowdha, Musannah, Sur and The Wave, Muscat. In less than five years, more than 11,000 Omanis have been introduced to sailing through Oman Sail's initiatives.
