(MENAFNEditorial) GEMS Education hosted 'Maker Day Dubai 2014', showcasing the creations of individuals or groups that invent, design, and/or build a product with the goal of learning, teaching, inspiring, or improving the world around them. The event, which was held at the GEMS Wellington Academy - Dubai Silicon Oasis, had over 800 participants from 21 schools and the broader Dubai community, presenting projects in categories including robotics, inventions, upcycling, green solutions, and more. Visitors had the opportunity to visit maker stalls to learn about the participants ideas, to attend workshops in everything from 3D printing to movie making, and to participate in on-the-spot projects creating murals or building with Lego.
Maker Day Dubai 2014 invited visitors to cast their votes for a People's Choice award and there were also jury awards given in six categories, including 'Most Likely to Be Found at Expo 2020.'
Winning teams came from GEMS Modern Academy, GEMS World Academy - Dubai, The Kindergarten Starters, Our Own English High School, Sharjah (Girls), Our Own English High School- Dubai, and Our Own High School- Al Warqa'a. The Westminster School- Dubai was awarded the School of the Year, for overall participation and contribution to the success of the event. Ten student groups will also represent GEMS at Innovator, which is organized by the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee and will be held in Abu Dhabi on March 7th and 8th
In addition to students, Maker Day Dubai drew creative types from around Dubai, volunteers from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and corporations hoping to inspire the community
Attendees had the pleasure of meeting Paul Nagelkerke, former participant in the World Maker Faire and representative for Innovator. Mr. Nagelkerke shared that he believes events like Maker Day Dubai are important because, "They allow people to share their passion for building and learning." Event judge Sameer Sortur, Director of Revenue Growth and Operations for Innovation 360, echoed Mr. Nagelkerke's enthusiasm, "These students are tomorrow's entrepreneurs!
Honored guests included Ms. Al Anoud Al Hashemi and Ms. Amal Al Zubeidy both from the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, Mr. Daniel Klotz from the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee, and Mr. Neville Sherman from GEMS Education
