Areva resumes production in Niger uranium mines

(MENAFN) French nuclear giant Areva resumed production in two uranium mines in Niger after they had been shut down for several weeks for maintenance, The Peninsula Qatar reported

The secretary general of mining union Synamin said: "The machines are running and production resumed this morning.

The shutdown came amid talks over the future of the company operating in the country. The government is seeking to apply a 2006 law that ends tax breaks to Areva, which has been exempted so far

The French company's contract in the country has expired last year, but the government agreed to keep production running while talks are taking place
