(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The 54-year-old American is a Seahawks season-ticket holder and bought seats for their much-hyped clash with the Broncos on the understanding that he could easily still reach New York with time to spare if he missed the cut at Emirates Golf Club.
However, 'Boom Boom' made the weekend action with successive rounds of 70 and 71 for a three-under par that has now shelved his prior plans for the spectacle.
"I bought these tickets a long time ago," explained Couples, who will watch the game from the emirate on TV.
"I don't know if I've ever gone to a tournament where I thought I was not going to make a cut. I go to tournaments thinking I'm going to do well, whether it's in Europe, on the PGA or wherever.
"But, this is different because the idea of me winning is slim and I'm far from doing that.
"I never thought that I'd be at the game when I committed to come here, but I made seven on the 12th hole today (Saturday) trying as hard as I could. If I'd have done that yesterday (Friday), I would be in New York by now!"
Couples is confident the underdog Seahawks can cause an upset against the more fancied Broncos too, with their collective unity and defensive strength shutting out Denver's dangerous quarterback Peyton Manning.
"I'm very excited to watch the Seahawks play. I'm a big believer," Couples added.
"I don't know any of the players or the coaches, but I've been to a couple of the practices and they all like to be around each other.
"There are a couple of guys that handle the offence and there are a couple of guys that handle the defence, so it's a pretty good mix. I like our chances.
"It's the number one defence against the number one offence and that's a great thing to watch. I'm a student of the game. I like to watch. I do watch our defence a lot when I'm up there watching these games.
"But, Peyton Manning is a different bird. He's phenomenal. He can take you right up and down the field and, if we can hold him to six field goals, we'll do alright. If we can slow him down, we have a chance."
