Etisalat, 16 industry leaders build global submarine cable


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A massive undertaking, the AAE-1 submarine cable spans 25,000 kms, connecting Hong Kong to Singapore, the Middle East, Africa and Europe with a design capacity of 40 terabits



Ali Amiri, executive vice-president, Carrier and Wholesale Services, Etisalat said: "Today's announcement is in line with both Etisalat's and the UAE's strategic objectives to be the regional hub for smart telecom and ICT services. With the country chosen to host World Expo 2020, this announcement showcases the readiness of our smart infrastructure being built based on the latest and cutting edge technology. AAE-1, with SmartHub as a key terminal landing point, complements our existing undersea systems, providing a reliable and scalable global infrastructure serving the regional need for faster internet speeds." The other global operators include China Unicom, Chuanwei, Djibouti Telecom, Mobily, Omantel, OTEGlobe, Ooredoo, PCCW Global, PTCL, Telecom Egypt, TOT and Viettel



AAE-1 uses the latest 100Gbps technology with a design capacity of over 40 terabits. The system has two diversified Point of Presence (PoP) in Asia (Hong Kong and Singapore) and three onward connectivity options in Europe (via France, Italy and Greece ) providing additional flexibility for the operators and customers



The cable is expected to be completed by 2016 connecting the UAE, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Oman, Qatar, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Italy and France
