Only 139 expatriates joined workforce in Oman in December last year NCSI


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The recent workforce figures released by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) shows a marginal increase in the total number of registered expatriate workers in Oman by the end of December 2013, as compared to November in the same year.


In December, only 139 new expatriate workers registered, taking the total to 1,527,241.


Breaking down the expatriate employment figures by sector, 55,909 were employed in the government sector, 1,247,207 were employed in the private sector, and 224,125 worked with families. The statistics also showed that the registered number of male workers (89 per cent) was higher than female workers (11 per cent). 


Regarding nationalities, Indians, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis accounted for the highest percentage (86.7 per cent) with a total 1,324,814 workers. Ethiopians accounted for 2.8 per cent (43,873), followed by Indonesians and Filipinos with 1.9 per cent for each of them with 29,759 Indonesians and 28,958 Filipinos.


Egyptians comprise (1.5 per cent) 22,941 workers. In addition, workers from Nepal and Sri Lanka accounted for 0.8 per cent for both nationalities with a total of 12,842 Nepalese and 12,344 Sri Lankans. The rest were from other Arab countries, Europe and America (3.4 per cent) with 51,710 workers.


The statistics also showed that 74 per cent of the country's expatriate workers 1,131,182, are at best educated to preparatory certificate level. This figure includes 22,595 illiterate workers. The percentage of expatriate workers with a higher education degree is only 6.4 per cent with a total of 99,254 from all nationalities.
